The Fantastic Four has officially started its production, with acclaimed makeup artist Barrie Gower joining the team to help the actors transform into their iconic characters.

Marvel's first family is set to return to the big screen next year, starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Eben Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/Thing. In previous Fantastic Four films, actors like Michael Chiklis, who portrayed The Thing in the 2005 and 2007 movies, used prosthetics for character transformation. Characters such as Galactus, Silver Surfer, and Mole Man also require extensive prosthetics and makeup. To meet these demands, Gower has been brought on as the prosthetic designer.

He led the team responsible for the monstrous look of Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna in Stranger Things and the zombie-like Clickers in The Last of Us. Gower has been nominated twice for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup at the 2023 Emmys and has won Emmys multiple times for his work on Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. Growing up in the north of England with a father who managed a cinema, Gower was deeply involved in arts, primarily drawings and sculptures. His interest was sparked by Fangoria magazine, which highlighted the work of Hollywood makeup artists. "I was a big fan of monster movies and creatures, and I couldn't believe when I saw in this magazine that you could do this for a living," Gower said. "So, I was very much on a mission, quite early on."

Characters like Mole Man, Silver Surfer, and Galactus are expected to utilize prosthetics. Marvel has announced that Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne are joining the cast in undisclosed roles, with rumors suggesting Hauser will play Mole Man. Gower will likely oversee his transformation. Moss-Bachrach, portraying The Thing, mentioned on Jimmy Kimmel Live that unlike Chiklis, he won't be wearing a prosthetic suit; instead, The Thing will be brought to life through motion capture and CGI.
